What is HypnoBirthing?
HypnoBirthing is as much a philosophy as it is a technique. The concept of HypnoBirthing is not new, but rather a “re-birth” of the philosophy of birthing as it existed thousands of years ago, and as it was recaptured in the work of Dr. Grantly Dick-Read, an English Obstetrician who first introduced the concept of natural birth in the 1920s. His book “Childbirth without Fear” is a must read for all expectant parents and childbirth professionals. This method teaches that in the absence of fear and tension, severe pain does not have to be an accompaniment of labor and birth. From a physiological standpoint, there is no reason why childbirth should be excruciating. Dick-Read noticed that women in underdeveloped countries did not suffer through childbirth as did women in developed countries. He was astonished to realize that the reason these women birthed so quickly and easily was because no one had ever told them that childbirth was supposed to be painful. Can it really be that simple? YES! The majority of our physiological responses are based on conditioning. When we expect pain, we are that much more likely to experience it. HypnoBirthing will teach you how to release any conditioned, negative false beliefs you may have about birth, and instill you with the trust that your body can and will function as nature intended.
Through HypnoBirthing training, you and your partner will gain an understanding of how the birthing muscles work in perfect harmony when your body is sufficiently relaxed. Free of the tension that fear creates, you will learn how to achieve deep levels of relaxation, and trust your natural birthing instincts for a calm, serene and comfortable birth. You will learn how to call upon your body’s natural pain relievers (endorphins), thus eliminating or reducing the need for pain medication. When your mind and body are in perfect harmony, nature will function as it does with all other creatures.
The use of HypnoBirthing can eliminate or greatly reduce the need for artificial induction and/or augmentation of labor, pain medication, episiotomy, and surgical birth. While we do not guarantee pain-free birth, many HypnoBirthing moms report feeling nothing more than pressure. The moms who experienced pain reported it to be mild and manageable, and they were able to forego the use of pain medication.
Women that HypnoBirth are never in a trance or asleep. They are awake, alert, and fully in control. What they experience is similar to the daydreaming or focusing that occurs when engrossed in a good book or a movie, or staring into a fire. They are conversant and in good spirits, yet totally relaxed. Awake throughout, they are aware of their uterine surges, but have conditioned themselves to reach complete relaxation, and determine the degree to which they choose to feel their surges. Rather than “heeheehooing” and pushing exhaustively, HypnoBirthing moms are taught how to remain relaxed and comfortable, and how to gently breathe their baby into the world in a calm and peaceful manner. In this calm state, the body releases endorphins that replace the stress hormones that can constrict and cause pain.
What Determines the Success of HypnoBirthing?Several factors determine the success of HypnoBirthing - the motivation and dedication of the parents, the support of the OB care provider, the parents (mainly moms) comfort with the chosen birth facility, and the avoidance of medical interventions. The focus on undisturbed birth is crucial. When other paths are chosen, different results may occur.
