Three minutes after going through the labor and delivery doors, I had Greer.

I went in for a 41st week appointment and had an ultrasound. My amniotic fluid was very low and the placenta looked old and had lots of calcification. They wanted to induce immediately, but I didn’t want to, so they checked me and I was almost fully effaced and 3 cm. We decided to strip my membranes to try to bring on labor (which made me 4cm) and have an IV to try to increase fluids to buy me another day or two. The fluids didn’t do much so I went home that night scheduled to come back the next morning to check the fluid again and get a second opinion about whether induction was necessary. The next morning, I started having back labor at about 6:15am. I spent a lot of time in the shower and in the polar bear position. We decided to head to the hospital at 8:15am as my surges had started coming about a minute apart from about 5 minutes apart at 6:15am. Steve ran in to get a wheel c hair and rushed me to labor and delivery. The nurse who had given me the IV the day before was on her way back from getting coffee and saw us coming. She rushed us through the doors at 9am and by the time I took off my skirt, I had a strong urge to push. Three minutes after going through the labor and delivery doors, I had Greer.

The midwife was very surprised to find I was 10cm dilated!

Hi Mia,

I had meant to be in touch before to thank you, but was interrupted by the early arrival of Millie May in the early hours of the 23rd!!

Just to briefly fill you in...my waters broke very early Tuesday morning and after speaking to several people throughout the day it appeared that this was normal and could, apparently, go on for weeks!  After being checked at Peterborough they told me that they wanted to induce me the following morning. You would have been proud of me as I felt I asked all the right questions but it was felt that because of  the fact that it was early, induction was the best course of action.

I was induced at 10pm Thursday evening,  and Millie arrived at 1.44am friday morning! Poor Lisa missed the event as she went home at midnight after the midwife said she didn't expect much to happen until morning!!

The HypnoBirthing techniques that we had learned were invaluable and I know also helped speed things along. When I said I really felt I wanted to push at around 1am the midwife was very surprised to find that I was 10cm dilated! I think it was the fact that I was so relaxed and had gotten to that point using the sleep breathing, rainbow relaxation and had really got the hang of  'filling the balloon' when I had a surge!

Although it wasn't quite what we had planned, my HypnoBirthing techniques helped me to stay calm and relaxed throughout and it was an amazing experience with no artificial pain relief! I feel incredibly honored and proud.

Millie came out without making a sound and within minutes had her eyes open and was looking at us. Twenty minutes later, she had latched on and suckled for nearly an hour.  Despite being early and little, she is strong, calm and healthy and I am also feeling great with no after problems at all! Fantastic!! My rose has blossomed!!!!!!!!

The midwife at Peterborough was wonderful and as far as possible under the circumstances adhered to all our requests  (fortunately I had written out our birth preferences)!

I can understand why you feel so passionate about HypnoBirthing because I feel the same way!

Thank you, thank you, thank you,

Tisha

A Letter from a HypnoBirthing Couple

Dear Dianne,

Even before Chris and I started seeing you, I liked everything I heard and read about HypnoBirthing.  However, I had doubts that I could learn the technique in only four sessions.  I enjoyed the sessions very much not only because I felt I was learning but also because I felt that you cared.  You were also excellent at helping me develop confidence in my natural birthing abilities, as well as helping me get rid of my fears.  Every visit with you made me feel more confident, calm, and positive about the birthing of our child, as well as myself as a parent and a person.

The funny part is that I gave birth before we even had a chance to take our last session with you.  This was my first child, and I expected that my labor would start past my due date.  To my surprise, my labor started two and a half weeks early.  I was in active labor for 14 hours total, 12 of which I spent at home.  Two hours after we arrived in the hospital, I had our son in my hands.  Although I had never given birth before, I felt confident and calm.  I listened to the relaxation tapes and did the breathing you taught me.  I had the birthing experience I had hoped for; natural and peaceful.

A few times during labor when I lost my focus for a moment, I realized how powerful what I learned from you was.  I realized how confusing and awful my experience could have been had I not learned to trust my body and had I not used the relaxation techniques you taught us.

I also want to thank you for the coaching you gave me over the phone when I was in the middle of my labor.  You called to confirm our cancellation of our last session, which was supposed to take place the next day.  I appreciated that you took the time to give me another caring reminder of the essential things to do to stay relaxed.  I really appreciated that you took genuine care and did not cut anything short.  Quite the opposite, you always took an extra step to give us as much help as possible.

There is no question in my mind that it was largely because of our HypnoBirthing sessions with you I had a wonderful birthing experience.  We will recommend the HypnoBirthing method and your excellent services to any of our friends who are expecting a child.

With love and gratitude

Biliana Stremska, Chris Andrews, and our son Jesse Stremska-Andrews

I want every woman to be empowered to trust her own body and its innate wisdom to co-create a beautiful baby.

My labor began with surges that were 2 minutes apart at 11:45. The midwives arrived about 3:00 and when they arrived I was doing svaroopa yoga to slow down surges so that they had time to set up for the birth. When the midwife checked my cervix I was at 3 centimeters, while listening to rainbow relaxation. When the next surge came my cervix immediately went from 3 cm to 7 cm during the exam. The midwife said, "Wow! That is so amazing how the HypnoBirthing really works." She said, "We had better call for the other midwives to arrive soon or they will miss the birth." Things began to  move quickly after one hour of relaxation and visualization. Using the HypnoBirthing methods of breathing and relaxation I was fully dilated. I was then not wanting to lie down any more. My husband and I began to use the birth ball and walk for a while until that became uncomfortable. Then I began to squat and hang from my husband allowing the entire pelvis to relax during each surge, allowing my baby to naturally flow down and out of my body. Each surge was building from the one before. I then walked into the bathroom, and my water broke on the toilet. Then the surges came stronger and harder and I could not control the urge. I had to begin to push. We then went into the birthing tub for the water birth. After about 10 minutes her head began to crown, and I felt her head with my hands. The midwives monitored her heart rate as the next surge began. They did not like the sound of her heart rate dropping so low. They asked me to get out of the tub and to walk over to the bed so that they could better view and watch as her head and shoulders continued to birth. I was amazed at how I was able to get up and move when I could feel my baby's head part of the way out between my legs. Yes, it is possible to get up and move at this point, and it was pretty easy to do so. Getting onto the bed was tricky. I began to birth on my side and then found it more comfortable on my back upright. The chord was wrapped once around Grace's neck and was very easily removed by the midwife. She was born to the song, "Amazing Grace." She never cried, and came out with her eyes wide open. When I put her on my chest she lifted her head and looked all around. She was so content and at peace she did not want to nurse until about 30 minutes after her birth, then she began to look for my nipple.

Thank you to all my supporters of this beautiful and natural process of birth and life. When the mind will allow, the body will do what it innately already knows how to do. It needs no help only no interference.

Please use any information here that you may find useful. It was such a wonderful experience. I want every woman to be empowered to trust her own body and its innate wisdom to co-create a beautiful baby, and give her the power to birth it!! Again, thank you for all that you do for so many families by supporting the miracle of birth.

My mother told me that every expectant mother should prepare with Hypnobirthing.

I've been meaning to send you an email about my birth story, but I don't know why I haven't had the chance until now.  I thought that it might be useful to you to know just how my birth went and what worked for us.

I had had strong Braxton-Hicks contractions for three days prior to actually beginning the birthing process.  In hindsight, I think that the contractions allowed me to practice my HypnoBirthing techniques and prepare for the real thing.  On November 24 at around 4 AM, I began feeling surges at fairly regular intervals - 4-7 minutes apart.  Erwin and I arrived at Inova Fair Oaks at 9:30, and the nurses in triage told me that I was 6 cm. dilated and about 90% effaced.  They could not believe that I wasn't in much pain at all.  Once we got settled in the labor and delivery room, Erwin put the Rainbow Relaxation and Birthing Affirmations CD on, which helped relax me in my new environment.  I remained focused with my sleep breathing during surges.  Erwin guided me through the deepening exercise and father's script, which helped.  Early in the day, Erwin and I walked around the hospital and paused during sur ges.  As my surges got stronger, I began to feel them mostly in my lower back.  Erwin practiced light-touch massage on my back and neck several times while I was seated on my birthing ball, which helped me a lot.  I was relaxed and at peace until about 5 PM, when the surges seemed to come one after another and last longer.  It was at that time, that Erwin said the birthing prompts to me.  I don't how I could have remained calm if he hadn't have done that.  By the time I was transitioning and ready to give birth to Sofia, I had a really hard time concentrating and really using what I had learned in HypnoBirthing.  But I regained my composure, with the help of Erwin's birthing prompts and encouragement from my doctor.  I breathed Sofia out after about 4 long and hard breaths/pushes, and Sofia was born at 6:09 PM.

I did tear a little, but I know that it would've been worse without HypnoBirthing.  Overall, Erwin and I were very pleased with how much HypnoBirthing helped us give our baby a safe, peaceful and natural start in life.  I tell everyone who asks about my birthing experience about HypnoBirthing, and many have been impressed.  My physician-parents, who had anything but natural and peaceful childbirths with me and my siblings, were very impressed with how HypnoBirthing worked for me and Erwin.  My mother even told me that every expecting mother should prepare with HypnoBirthing.

So thank you for all your hard work in preparing us for such a beautiful birth.  We have such a happy baby, and I am a very calm mom partly because of what you taught us.

I remember being very calm in the final stages.

For the birth of our first baby, I wanted a natural birth but looking back, I realized that I did not really have a plan on how to go about it. I had been induced for being late and when after half a day of various induction techniques and tremendous pain, I was told that my contractions were not strong enough to do what they should be doing, I had given up in my mind and had an epidural. The birth turned out well in the scheme of things but I still needed stitches and was left unhappy with the whole experience. So for the birth of our second baby, we chose to prepare with Patti in HypnoBirthing.. After the course and whereas the idea had not appealed to us at all before, we decided to have a home birth as we felt it would be the best way to avoid too much intervention from the hospital staff. We bought a pool for a water birth. My due date came and went. After 7 days and 2 nights of mild contractions at night which would go away in the morning, it seemed that things were finally happening. I called the midwife at 2.30am. After examining me, she said that the baby was still high, that I was only 2cm and hadn't started effacing. Seeing how calm I looked, she said that the contractions would have to get much stronger and that I should go back to bed and rest. So I put the Hypnobirthing CD on repeat mode and laid in bed next to my husband who was blissfully sleeping with earplugs. I laid on my side with a maternity pillow between the knees and did the breathing exercises which we had learnt in class trying to keep my body as limp as possible. At 6.00am, our 19-month old daughter woke up and I asked my husband to give her her bottle and send her off to the nanny. I decided to have a shower. In the shower I had two very strong surges which seemed to take over my whole body so I decided to call the midwife. On the phone with her, I continued to have some very stro ng surges when suddenly my waters broke and the baby started coming out. I went quickly to the bathroom, sat on the floor and on the advice of the midwife asked my husband to call 911. My husband who had no idea what was happening came into the bathroom and saw the baby's head coming out. I remember being very calm in the final stages. I knew not to push. The baby's head came out effortlessly and without any pain. I then waited a few moments and the baby was born with another J breath. My husband put our baby on my stomach and we calmly waited for the ambulance which arrived a few minutes later. The first midwife arrived about 15 minutes after the birth and cut the cord. Our baby never went to the hospital. My husband and I had the most incredible bonding experience with our new baby and 7 weeks later I still feel a very strong bond with our daughter and have had no feeling of 'baby blues'. I thank Patti very much for these amazing moments.

My doctor said he's always seen very good results with HypnoBirthing.

I was very impressed with the concept – our bodies truly were meant to give birth.  My mindset changed completely after taking the class and this definitely changed my birthing experience.  I had the most calm and wonderful birth of my son.  I didn’t know t hat it could be so calm and wonderful.  Because I was so relaxed, I was able to breathe my son down and then push for 36 minutes (my first time giving birth – not bad!).  My doctor said he's always seen very good results with HypnoBirthing.

She was born relaxed, observing the world with what seems like quiet confidence.

I've just received my certificate as a HypnoBirthing practitioner. I'm so excited to be a part of this. Thank you!

I thought you might enjoy knowing that my HypnoBirthing baby was born on April 13. Nowhere are the effects of HypnoBirthing evident as much as in my daughter's peacefulness and happiness. She was born relaxed, observing the world with what seems like quiet confidence. And I've never seen a baby with such a tendency to smile and giggle spontaneously at such a young age. Her birth didn't seem to be traumatic for her at all; it was more like a quiet homecoming.

Best wishes,

I reached down to catch my daughter and cried, and cried as I held my "angel."

My water broke at the Tacoma Mall while I was walking around so we went to the birthing center to get checked and I was only at 2cm so we went home for about 2 hours then went back to the birthing center, arriving at 7:30pm on January 29th 2006. Nancy, my midwife, checked me again and I was at a 3. I sat on my birthing ball while listening to a peaceful cd and breathing through my contractions. I laid in bed for a while and began to feel transition phase, causing me to throw up. At that point, I wanted to relax in the tub so I did for a long time. About 1/2 way through tub time, I felt like I might be able to push if I wanted, but didn't say anything. Eventually, something told me that I should get out of the tub and give birth to my daughter.  When Nancy checked me, she told me I could push at anytime, and my mom and my doula couldn't believe it. I pushed for 15 minutes and felt my daughters head emerge. I reached down to c atch my daughter and cried, and cried as I held my "angel", my daughter Aiyana Rhiannon Henningsen. She was so beautiful, with a head full of hair and so perfect. I would not do anything different. My labor and birth went so well. If you would like to use this story, you are more than welcome to.
